The Ezinze Division of the Enugu Police Command successfully rescued victims allegedly kidnapped by gunmen along Eke-Ebe Road in Udi Local Government Area. Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the rescue, stating that the victims were abducted around 4:45 p.m. on March 31, 2024, and rescued about 90 minutes later after a fierce gun duel with the criminals, who eventually fled, leaving the victims behind.
The rescue operation, conducted in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch Group, followed a swift response to information about the abduction. The victims were traveling in two Mercedes Benz 4Matic jeeps when they were kidnapped and taken into the forest. The police, upon receiving the information, engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle, leading to the rescue of the victims.
Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu condemned the misinformation in a viral video that alleged another police team refused to rescue the victims. He clarified that the second team, upon arrival, was awaiting necessary intelligence guidance before entering the forest to avoid any collateral damage. The commissioner denounced the video as a deliberate act of mischief aimed at maligning the police force and detracting from their efforts to combat criminal activities in the state.
The Enugu State Police Command reiterated its commitment to eradicating criminal elements in the state, emphasizing that despite such misinformation, it remains focused on ensuring the safety and security of residents. Ongoing operations are aimed at locating and apprehending the perpetrators involved in the kidnapping incident.
