Gunmen have shot and killed popular politician Ejike Ukwueze in Enugu State. The tragic incident occurred on Friday night while Ukwueze was driving in Neke Odenigbo, Enugu East Local Government Area.
A viral video showed Ukwueze's vehicle riddled with bullet holes, indicating a violent attack. Ukwueze was the immediate younger brother of Chijioke Ukwueze, the late member who represented Isi-Uzo constituency in the Enugu Assembly and passed away during a plenary session in 2020.
Sources close to the family allege that the killing was politically motivated, suggesting it was an assassination. Ukwueze had been gaining influence in the Isi-Uzo Local Government Area ahead of the October local government elections.
A family insider noted, "He was becoming a force in Isi-Uzo political affairs, stepping in for his late brother, a powerful political stakeholder."
The Enugu State police have yet to comment on the incident.
