A 23-year-old fake Spiritualist, Odeyemi Hammed Oluwaseun, has been sentenced to one year in prison for defrauding victims by impersonating an American-based female spiritualist. Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin delivered the judgment on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Oluwaseun used his fake identity to dupe victims into believing he could restore their romantic relationships.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Oluwaseun with two counts of internet fraud and obtaining by false pretenses. He was accused of defrauding a victim, Bose, of $3,200 and another, Schneider Alina, of $4,500. Posing as "Lord Hill" and using social media accounts, he promised to use spiritual powers to reconcile the victims with their partners.
Oluwaseun pleaded guilty to the charges, leading the court to convict him. The prosecution, represented by Sesan Ola, presented evidence, including $1,000 recovered from the convict. Justice Abdulgafar sentenced him to six months of suspended jail term for each count and ordered the forfeiture of $1,000, an iPhone 15, and a 2008 Toyota Camry to the federal government.
This case underscores the EFCC's commitment to curbing internet fraud and protecting unsuspecting victims from fraudulent schemes. The forfeited assets will now serve as restitution for the crimes committed.
