Fallen Heroes Honored: President Tinubu Vows Justice for Ambushed Soldiers

The funeral of the 17 officers and soldiers killed in Delta State on March 14 took place in Abuja. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside governors and military chiefs, paid tribute to the fallen heroes, including a Lt. Colonel, two majors, one Captain, and 13 soldiers. They were attacked while on a peace mission in the Okuama community, following a longstanding dispute between Okuama and Okoloba Communities.

President Tinubu announced government support for the families of the deceased, offering housing anywhere of their choice and full educational scholarships up to university level for their children and unborn children. He awarded posthumous honors to the fallen officers and soldiers, and directed the Military Pensions Board to ensure all their entitlements are paid within 90 days.

The President commended the Armed Forces for their restraint and stated that those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice. Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja described the soldiers' deaths as barbaric and demoralizing, emphasizing the military's efforts to recover their remains and missing equipment. Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa assured that the sacrifices of the fallen heroes would not be in vain, pledging support for their families.

The burial ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including governors, military officials, and lawmakers, who honored the deceased for their service and sacrifice. The tragic incident in Okuama has highlighted the challenges faced by security forces in maintaining peace and security in the country, underscoring the need for greater efforts to protect those who protect the nation.
