Fans Slam VAR as Survey Reveals Widespread Frustration

A new survey has revealed that most Premier League fans believe the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has negatively affected their matchday experience.

The poll, conducted by the Football Supporters’ Association and involving nearly 8,000 fans across all 20 clubs, found that over 90% of respondents feel VAR has made attending matches worse.

Fans pointed especially to the impact on goal celebrations, with 91% saying VAR has reduced the spontaneity of those moments. Meanwhile, 94% disagreed that the technology has improved the viewing experience on television.

According to the association’s Premier League network manager, Thomas Concannon, the results reflect growing dissatisfaction among supporters. He noted that many fans are frustrated by delays in decision-making, questionable accuracy, and the disruption of the natural flow of the game.

“People are annoyed about the time it takes, the accuracy, and the loss of spontaneity. It takes away from what football is meant to be,” he said.

Despite the criticism, the Premier League has defended the use of VAR, acknowledging fans’ concerns while insisting the focus should be on improving its implementation rather than scrapping it entirely.

The findings highlight a clear divide between football authorities and supporters, with many fans pushing for VAR to be removed, while officials continue to back reforms to make the system more effective
