The Abia State Government confirmed the tragic death of an Abia State University student during a cult clash over the weekend. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, during a briefing after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu stated, "It has come to the notice of the state government about skirmishes in Abia State University, Uturu, between student groups where a student lost his life. Some remedial actions have been taken to return normalcy (in the institution), and the state government has dispatched some security agencies to Abia State University Uturu."
He urged students to avoid violence and focus on their studies. Reports indicate that tensions remain high at the school following the clash between two rival cult groups, resulting in the death of a 400-level student.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the victim, a 400-level History and International Relations student, was attacked by members of a rival group within the university area, leading to his death. The incident has heightened tensions on campus after the cult clash.
Efforts to reach school authorities for comment were unsuccessful due to poor network connectivity. However, the state Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwumelie, confirmed that the police are aware of the matter and are investigating the incident.
