A joint security operation involving the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command and the military has successfully rescued a kidnapped naval officer, Lt. Cynthia Akor, and two civilians abducted from Mpape, Abuja, on March 21, 2025. The rescue operation came after the victims were abducted during a violent attack by armed assailants at the Maman Vatsa Estate gate.
At around 7:35 pm on the specified date, the kidnappers blocked Mpape Road, opened fire on moving vehicles, and forcibly abducted the naval officer and two civilians. The armed men later contacted the families of the victims, demanding ₦500 million for Lt. Akor and ₦200 million each for the two civilians.
In response to the kidnapping, the FCT Police Command, in collaboration with the military, initiated a search-and-rescue operation. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), DCP Isyaku Sharu, spearheaded the effort, which included the Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit, military personnel, the Department of State Services (DSS), and local hunters. The operation spanned Mpape, Gidan Bawa, Anguwan Mu’azu, Yelwa Hills, and extended into Nasarawa State.
The security forces tracked down the suspects to a Fulani resettlement in Anguwan Mu’azu and Yelwa Hills between 2 am and 5:30 am on March 23, 2025. Four suspects were arrested, and the kidnapped victims were rescued unharmed. Additionally, ₦3.2 million in suspected ransom money was recovered from the suspects.
Following the rescue, the victims are now receiving medical care at the Nigerian Army Clinic and are reported to be in stable condition. While the operation has led to the arrest of four suspects, efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend other members of the kidnapping gang.
The police have also reinforced security in Mpape and surrounding areas to prevent future criminal activities. Authorities reassured the public that they could go about their daily activities without fear, as security deployments are in place to ensure safety.
