Federal Government Declares May 1, 2024, as Public Holiday for Workers’ Day!

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 1, 2024, a public holiday to commemorate Workers’ Day. The announcement was made in a press statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Aishetu Ndayako, on Tuesday. The statement highlighted the importance of excellence, efficiency, and fairness in labor, echoing the sentiments of Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who emphasized the government's commitment to fostering innovation, productivity, and inclusivity in workplaces.

Tunji-Ojo reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to promoting excellence, efficiency, and fairness in labor, emphasizing the importance of fostering innovation, productivity, and inclusivity in workplaces. He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate, reaffirming its resolve to prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens.

 

The 2024 Workers' Day is highly anticipated, as President Tinubu may unveil the newly proposed minimum wage for workers in the country on that day. The Nigeria Labour Congress has listed seven demands from the Federal Government ahead of the Workers’ Day, including a new minimum wage and the creation of state and local government police to tackle insecurity. The Congress also stressed that states, local governments, and the organized private sector must pay the new minimum wage once it is approved.
