Renowned human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, has issued a caution to Nigerian protesters to ensure their actions do not undermine the goals of their demonstrations. Speaking to journalists on Monday, Falana advised youths protesting against hunger, hardship, and socio-economic policies to be vigilant against thugs and undemocratic elements exploiting the peaceful protests for violence or advocating for a military coup.
Falana condemned the display of Russian flags during protests in Northern Nigeria, where demonstrators chanted "Tinubu must go," labeling it an abuse of constitutional rights. He emphasized the necessity of peaceful protests within legal boundaries, citing Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act 2020, which mandates the Nigeria Police Force to provide security for lawful public gatherings.
Falana highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of the protests against government policies and warned that those calling for a military coup or showcasing symbols of countries supporting unconstitutional changes in government could face charges of treasonable felony under Section 41 of the Criminal Code Act.
He urged the Tinubu administration to address the neoliberal policies contributing to widespread poverty and hardship, making unconstitutional changes of government less appealing to the populace.
