The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently.
The announcement was made by Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as part of the seven-day national mourning period declared on Sunday.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the holiday is described as a mark of respect for Buhari’s service, integrity, and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” said Tunji-Ojo. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
The Minister urged citizens to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national unity, aligning with the late leader’s lifelong vision for a prosperous and cohesive Nigeria.
As previously announced, national flags are to fly at half-mast from Sunday, July 13 through Saturday, July 19, throughout the mourning period.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
