Finland Releases Two Suspects Arrested with Simon Ekpa; Extradition Request Pending

Finland

The Government of Finland has released two of the suspects arrested alongside Simon Ekpa for alleged subversive activities, The Nation reported. Ekpa, who was detained in November 2024 with four others, faces charges related to incitement to violence and terrorism financing in Nigeria. While the identities of the released individuals remain undisclosed, government sources confirmed their release, noting that Ekpa remains in custody.

Ekpa was accused of spreading terrorist propaganda on social media and has been held in prison since his arrest. This development comes as Nigeria pushes for his extradition, with Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa confirming that extradition requirements have been sent to Finland. “The Federal Government has forwarded the necessary documents, and legal action will follow,” Gen. Musa stated.

Authorities in both countries are reportedly collaborating to address the violent activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Nigeria’s Southeast. The Finnish Government is said to be working closely with its Nigerian counterparts to bring an end to the group's subversive operations.

Ekpa’s continued detention underscores the seriousness of the allegations against him, as Nigerian authorities seek his return to face justice for his alleged role in fueling unrest in the region.
