Foreign Fighters, Local Informants Fuel Rising Terrorist Attacks – DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has linked the resurgence of terrorist activities in Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest regions to an influx of foreign fighters from the Sahel and local informants aiding the insurgents. Maj.-Gen Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed this during a press briefing, emphasizing the military’s resolve to dismantle terrorist networks despite ongoing challenges. Over 40 lives were recently lost in a Borno State attack, prompting President Bola Tinubu to order an investigation.

Troops have intensified operations, neutralizing 156 terrorists, arresting 464 individuals for various crimes, and rescuing 181 kidnapped victims last week. Additional successes included the seizure of 219 weapons, the destruction of illegal oil refineries, and the recovery of stolen crude oil and refined products. Meanwhile, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno urged residents to avoid aiding insurgents, warning that such collaborations undermine regional stability.

In Katsina, Governor Dikko Radda condemned an attack on Kankara General Hospital, pledging swift action against those threatening healthcare workers. Similarly, Zamfara State operations reported the death of five soldiers during an offensive, with six terrorists neutralized and weapons recovered. Across these states, efforts continue to curb violence and ensure public safety.

The United Nations has condemned the increasing attacks, calling for justice and accountability. Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle reiterated the need for enhanced funding to equip the military for modern security challenges, stressing that adequate resources are crucial to resolving banditry and terrorism effectively.
