Former President Goodluck Jonathan arrived in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to unveil the construction of the N222.1bn Trans-Kalabari Road. The road project is a legacy initiative aimed at connecting the city with several coastal Ijaw communities in the state.

Jonathan's arrival at the Port Harcourt International Airport with his entourage was met with anticipation as the project's unveiling amid the ongoing political crisis was seen by some as a strategic move by Governor Siminalayi Fubara to strengthen his political alliances.

The Trans-Kalabari Road project, approved by the Rivers State Executive Council during a meeting presided over by Governor Fubara, will be funded with savings from the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). The contract, awarded to the tune of N222,114,563,830.2, has already seen a 30% mobilization fee paid to the contractor.

According to Warisenibo Joseph Johnson, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, the project is designed to be completed within 32 months. The road will span from NSS Pathfinder, passing through several communities, and extending to Aker Base Road in Rumuolumeni Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Johnson emphasized that the project signifies the state government's commitment to infrastructure development without resorting to external borrowing. The completion of the Trans-Kalabari Road is expected to enhance connectivity and socioeconomic development in the region.
