FRSC Impounds Over 350 Vehicles Nationwide for Unauthorized Number Plates

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has impounded over 350 vehicles across Nigeria within one month for using unauthorized number plates, as part of its ongoing enforcement campaign to enhance road safety and national security.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide, revealed this during an interview on Monday in Abuja, noting that the operation, which began on February 3, targets fake registration numbers, unauthorized number plates, and illegal use of diplomatic, government, and commercial plates.

Why the Crackdown?

Ogungbemide emphasized that the proliferation of fake number plates poses a major security risk, as it undermines law enforcement efforts and makes it easier for criminals to operate undetected.

“The enforcement is still ongoing. This is not just about road safety—it is also a national security issue. A situation where fake number plates are widespread is a serious concern,” he stated.

Initially launched in Abuja, the campaign was later expanded to all states, resulting in the seizure of 350 vehicles within a month.

“We impounded vehicles using fake diplomatic numbers and unrecognized number plates. We don’t know where they were printed from, and we don’t know who gave them the permission.”

Legal Number Plates: A Simple Process

Ogungbemide urged vehicle owners to obtain legal number plates through the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS), which provides secure vehicle registration.

He also warned against the use of unauthorized "fancy number plates", stating that while customized plates are allowed, they must be legally obtained through the NVIS to ensure compliance with national security regulations.

“If you can afford millions of naira to buy a vehicle, you should be able to spend a few thousand naira to get a legal number plate. It’s a matter of prioritizing safety and security,” he added.

FRSC Calls for Public Cooperation

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all vehicles operate with legitimate registration numbers and urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to report suspicious number plates to the nearest FRSC office to help curb the rising use of fake registration numbers.

With the nationwide crackdown still in progress, motorists are advised to regularize their vehicle registrations to avoid seizure, penalties, or legal action.
