FRSC warns motorists of gully erosion on Onitsha-Owerri road

FRSC Warns Motorists as Gully Erosion Destroys Lane on Onitsha–Owerri Road

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned motorists using the Onitsha–Owerri Road to drive with extreme caution following a massive gully erosion that has washed away an entire lane of the highway at the Ozubulu section in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The erosion, which reportedly began months ago near the Sea Horse area, worsened after heavy rainfall on Tuesday, completely collapsing one side of the road and posing serious danger to motorists.

A viral video shared on social media showed the extent of the damage, with road users warning others to be extra careful — especially at night — when visibility is poor.

Reacting to the situation, the FRSC Public Education Officer for Anambra State, Margaret Onabe, issued a statement on Saturday urging drivers to slow down and follow safety instructions while passing through the affected area.

She explained that officials from the FRSC, along with the Federal Controller of Works, the Chairman of Ekwusigo LGA, and engineers from Tamaic Construction Company, have visited the site to assess the damage and ensure traffic continues to flow safely.

“The Federal Road Safety Corps, Oraifite Unit Command, responded promptly to a distress call about the worsening erosion at Ozubulu,” the statement read.

“Following directives from the Sector Commander, the Unit Commander and her team immediately alerted road users and mobilised key stakeholders to the site. As of now, the FRSC team, Tamaic Construction Company, and officials from the Federal Ministry of Works are on ground to manage the situation and adjust barricades to prevent accidents.”

The FRSC commended the swift collaboration between government officials, local authorities, and engineers, while assuring motorists that the situation is being closely monitored.

“The motoring public is advised to remain vigilant, obey safety officers on duty, and drive carefully — especially near the erosion site,” the statement added.
