Fuel Comparison Video Sparks Long Queues at MRS Stations Across Lagos

Long queues emerged at MRS petrol stations across Lagos following a viral video comparing fuel from MRS and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The video, posted by tech influencer Olatunde Shobajo, known as Valor Reviews, showed a side-by-side test of petrol purchased from NNPC and MRS stations.

In the comparison test, Shobajo used two new generators, revealing that the generator powered by MRS-supplied fuel lasted 30 minutes and 51 seconds, while the one using NNPC fuel stopped at 17 minutes and 51 seconds—a 13-minute difference favoring MRS.

The video sparked debate, with many Nigerians accusing NNPC of monopolistic practices and poor-quality fuel distribution. However, NNPC spokesperson Olufemi Soneye dismissed the claims, stating that both fuels were sourced from Dangote Refinery, which meets strict industry standards.

“The NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the misleading allegations in the viral video,” Soneye said. “The video contradicts itself, as the NNPC station’s fuel is from Dangote Refinery, a key partner in local fuel production and energy security. We will take legal action against anyone spreading falsehoods to mislead the public.”

The controversy highlights rising competition in Nigeria’s fuel market and growing consumer demand for transparency and quality assurance.
