FUTA Non-Teaching Staff Protest for Release of Withheld Salaries

Non-teaching staff members at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) have staged a peaceful protest demanding the release of their four months' withheld salaries from 2022. Led by the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU), the protesters conducted a sit-out at the university's entrance gate.

Carrying placards with messages like "FG we are hungry," "No double standard, pay us our withheld salaries," "FG, stop victimizing SSANU, non-teaching staff," and "Pay a living wage to workers as promised," the protesters chanted solidarity songs along the Akure-Ibadan highway without obstructing traffic.

Comrade Felix Adubi, Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council (JAC) FUTA, highlighted the protesters' grievances, stating that only one of the four unions that went on strike in 2022 had been paid, and the rest had their salaries withheld. He criticized the government's divide-and-rule tactics and called on President Tinubu to fulfill his promises to avoid further crises in Nigerian universities.

"Mr. President has promised there will be no crisis in the Nigerian Universities. We can no longer guarantee industrial harmony if Mr. President fails to do the needful," Adubi stated.
