Gas explosion kills three police officers in Italy

Italy

Three police officers have died and several others were injured in Italy after a house exploded during an attempted eviction in the early hours of Tuesday, authorities said.

According to firefighters, the blast also left around a dozen people injured, including law enforcement officers and a civilian woman.

Local reports said the explosion happened in Castel d’Azzano, near Verona, when police tried to enter a house filled with gas. The blast occurred as the front door was opened during the eviction operation.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that the police had been attempting to evict three siblings — a brother and sister in their 60s, and another family member. The pair were arrested, while the third suspect managed to flee.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid tribute to the fallen officers, whose bodies were pulled from the rubble, saying she was closely following the investigation into the tragic incident.

Firefighters confirmed in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that twelve law enforcement officers and a woman were injured in the explosion.
