Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) to play a pivotal role in restoring lasting peace to the conflict-ridden region of Gaza. Speaking at the ongoing 148th Session of the IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, Akpabio emphasized the need for nations to transcend political and ideological differences and prioritize humanity by working towards sustainable peace in Gaza.
Akpabio stressed the importance of resolutions that would ensure access to humanitarian aid, the restoration of normalcy in Gaza, and the initiation of discussions for a permanent ceasefire. He highlighted the urgency of the situation, pointing out the immediate need to address the humanitarian crisis affecting the people of Gaza, including lack of access to clean water and medical care.
The Senate president emphasized the need for unity among nations to address the crisis in Gaza, urging that resolutions must be comprehensive and inclusive. He called for the release of hostages and prisoners of war as a step towards building trust and paving the way for meaningful negotiations for lasting peace.
Akpabio urged delegates to prioritize the humanitarian aspect of the conflict, emphasizing that the suffering of innocent civilians should not be overshadowed by political agendas. He called for a collaborative effort to draft resolutions that would address the immediate needs of the people of Gaza and contribute to long-term peace in the region.
