Residents of Goningora in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State have blocked the Abuja-Kaduna highway to protest against the frequent bandit attacks on their communities. The protest follows an attack on Wednesday night, February 28th, 2024, which resulted in numerous kidnappings and injuries among community members. The unrest has caused significant congestion on the highway, leaving many motorists stranded.
The attack, which led to the protest, also resulted in the death of two people, including a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force. The residents, enraged by the incident, took to the streets on Thursday morning, effectively blocking the busy Abuja-Kaduna highway. The recent assault on Goningora comes just a week after the military eliminated a notorious bandit leader, Boderi Isyaku, and several of his followers in the Chikun local government area.
According to reports, the bandits set fire to a military armoured vehicle during the attack on Goningora while soldiers were trying to repel them. The residents' protest highlights their frustration and fear over the insecurity plaguing their communities, particularly along the Abuja-Kaduna highway, a critical transportation route in the region.
