Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has embarked on a peace-building process between the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, and the suspended Dukes (Enigies). The governor disclosed this after a meeting with some dukes in Edo South, held at the residence of the Enogie of Evbo-Obanosa, Prof. Gregory Akenzua.
Governor Obaseki stated that the meeting aimed to understand the issues at stake and broker peace to reconcile the aggrieved parties. He condemned the actions of some politicians whom he accused of attempting to hijack and distort the matter, urging them to handle the Benin royalty with care, as it is a unique inheritance that Edo people must preserve.
The governor highlighted the recent incident in court where there was almost a breakdown of law and order over a case involving some Enigies and the palace. He reiterated the government's commitment to seeking an amicable reconciliation, starting with meeting with the aggrieved Enigies to understand their concerns and resolve them.
Governor Obaseki emphasized the blood relationship between every Enogie in Edo South and the palace, noting that they are an extension of the Benin royal family. He expressed hope that the case would be withdrawn from court, as the Enigies have assured him of their eagerness to promote peace and acknowledge the Oba of Benin as their royal father. The governor plans to continue the peace talks by visiting the Iyase and eventually meeting with the Oba of Benin to resolve the issues at hand.
