Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has pledged to demolish more buildings to facilitate the thorough cleanup of the Dosunmu market. His commitment comes after a devastating fire ravaged the market, destroying at least 14 buildings, with four structures collapsing in the process.
Sanwo-Olu, who visited the market on Thursday, described the fire as "preventable" and attributed it to negligence. He emphasized that the market would remain closed until all structures are deemed safe and compliant with regulations, with unapproved buildings facing demolition.
Expressing disappointment over the incident, the governor highlighted that the fire, which started on Tuesday, was exacerbated by the reckless behavior of some individuals who hindered first responders. He noted that despite efforts to control the fire, the site remains active, indicating the possibility of more buildings collapsing.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for a comprehensive audit to determine the root cause of the fire, particularly pointing out the conversion of residential apartments into warehouses storing inflammable materials. He warned that the government would not tolerate non-compliance with safety regulations and vowed to take decisive action against violators, including the demolition of unsafe structures and the closure of the market until full assessments and cleanup are completed.
