Governor Umo Eno has called on traders to support the subsidy regime he is initiating to distribute food at cheaper prices to the people of Akwa Ibom state, amidst rising commodity prices and prevailing hardships. Addressing food sellers and market associations at the Government House in Uyo, Eno emphasized the need for diligence and balancing of interests among traders, government, and beneficiaries.
The governor's consultations with stakeholders and partners involved in the food subsidy program aim to ensure its successful implementation. Eno expressed optimism that the food voucher initiative would yield positive results, urging traders to partner with the government to ensure accountability, transparency, and proper management of the vouchers.
Eno also encouraged people in rural communities to participate in the program as vendors, offering them the opportunity to engage in genuine business. He warned that if traders hinder the food subsidy program, the government would utilize its bulk purchase program to sell food directly to the people at discounted rates.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor, highlighted the importance of the meeting, stating that it was to ensure that foodstuffs reach the people of Akwa Ibom at affordable rates. Eno reiterated that the food subsidy program is a temporary measure to help people cope with the food crisis and urged residents to return to farming as a lasting solution.
