Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has approved the release of ₦8 billion to settle the backlog of pensions and gratuities for retired primary school teachers and other civil servants. The liabilities, accrued from 2019 to 2021, are set to be cleared under this approval. Zulum made the announcement on Wednesday at the council chamber of the government house in Maiduguri.

The governor highlighted his administration's consistent efforts in addressing pension liabilities since 2019. He noted the disbursement of ₦3 billion in 2019 to clear gratuities of 1,684 retirees and an additional ₦12 billion in 2020 to settle dues for retirees from both state and local government services. In total, Zulum’s administration has paid about ₦25 billion in pensions and gratuities since taking office.

Reaffirming his commitment, Zulum assured that all outstanding liabilities would be fully addressed before the end of his tenure in 2027. "Insh’Allah, I will clear all the backlog of gratuities before I leave office," he stated, emphasizing his dedication to the welfare of retired civil servants.

This move underscores Zulum’s administration’s focus on addressing long-standing pension challenges and improving the livelihoods of retirees in Borno State.
