An advocacy group, the Gombe State Citizens Investigative Platform (GOCIP), has praised Governor Muhammadu Yahaya for dismissing four Senior Special Assistants over their involvement in the assault of a serving councillor.
The commendation followed a viral video showing one of the governor’s aides, Adamu Danko, physically attacking the councillor representing Shamaki Ward, Abdulrahman Sheriff, an incident that triggered widespread public outrage.
Acting on the recommendations of an investigative committee, Governor Yahaya on Tuesday approved the sack of four aides linked to the incident. Those affected are Adamu Abdullahi Danko (Senior Special Assistant II, Domestic), Garba Mohammed Mai Rago (Senior Special Assistant II, Political), Rabiu Abubakar (Senior Special Assistant II, Social Media), and Ali Kaya (Senior Special Assistant II, Community Relations).
In a statement signed on Wednesday by its leader, Ibrahim Wala, GOCIP described the governor’s action as a clear show of leadership and respect for the rule of law.
The group said the decision demonstrated that the governor was willing to listen to public concerns and act decisively to protect democratic values.
According to GOCIP, the sack went beyond disciplining erring aides, adding that it helped safeguard the image of Gombe State and check the culture of impunity.
“This action does more than punish misconduct; it protects the image of Gombe State and shows a commitment to justice and accountability,” the statement said.

However, the group urged the governor to address deeper issues within the political system to prevent a repeat of such incidents. It warned that political thuggery often thrives when encouraged by influential figures operating behind the scenes.
GOCIP called on the governor to investigate those who empowered the dismissed aides, stressing that sustained action would further strengthen public trust and good governance in the state.
The group added that by putting the interest of citizens first, Governor Yahaya was not only securing peace in Gombe but also building a leadership profile that could earn national recognition.
