Some unidentified armed men on Wednesday attacked a joint police patrol team along the Abatete–Eziowelle Road in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State.
The attack, which sparked panic in the area, led to a gun battle between the assailants and the police.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen set a patrol vehicle ablaze and injured one police officer during the exchange.
One eyewitness said the attackers, heavily armed and dressed in military and police-style uniforms, ambushed operatives from the Department of Operations, Awka, and the Special Anti-Cultism Squad during routine surveillance.
He added that the assailants operated in a convoy consisting of a white Toyota Hummer bus, a black Lexus 350 SUV, and a white Toyota Highlander—all with unidentified number plates.
A fierce shootout reportedly forced the attackers to retreat after several minutes. However, the patrol bus belonging to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad was set on fire, and another patrol pickup from the Department of Operations was badly damaged by bullets.
Videos circulating online show the burning vehicle as residents ran for safety.
The Anambra Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that the armed group was intercepted and repelled by police operatives. He added that no civilian casualties occurred.
