Gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) attacked a police station in Orumba South, Anambra State, on Monday, September 16, killing two police officers. The attackers, reportedly enforcing the sit-at-home order, bombed the Umunze Police Station and engaged in a gunfight with security forces.
Joint Security Forces, including the Military, Police, Navy, and Civil Defence, responded swiftly, recovering five unexploded bombs at the scene. While eyewitnesses claimed three fatalities, state police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the deaths of two officers during the confrontation.
According to Ikenga, the attackers arrived with improvised explosives and opened fire on the station, causing partial damage. The fallen officers died defending the station and their bodies have been taken to the morgue.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, visited the scene for an assessment and reinforced security measures in the area. The security forces are currently pursuing the suspects involved in the attack.
