The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, has expressed confidence in the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) recently launched by President Bola Tinubu, believing it will enhance quality health delivery for all Nigerians.
Pate highlighted that the NHSRII is based on a sector-wide approach, mandated by the President for every actor within Nigeria's health system to adopt a common template. This directive aims to ensure the development and implementation of initiatives that save lives, reduce physical and financial pain, and provide health for all Nigerians in an equitable and accessible manner.
Speaking at a roundtable discussion on Rethinking Malaria Elimination in Nigeria in Abuja, Pate noted that Nigeria, despite implementing malaria elimination programs for 70 years, has not been able to eradicate the disease due to insufficient focus and commitment.
He emphasized the need for Nigeria and other African countries to utilize newer evidence-based tools, quality data systems, strengthen collaborations, develop smarter financing models, and new procurement modalities to eliminate malaria. Pate called for a reimagining of routine approaches to interventions, stressing the importance of leveraging these strategies to achieve lasting impact in the fight against malaria.
