Heavy security has been deployed at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) head office on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, in anticipation of protests. The EFCC had previously warned about groups planning demonstrations against the commission.
Operatives from the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Department of State Services (DSS) have been stationed with patrol vans, anti-riot gun trucks, and Black Marias at strategic points leading to the EFCC office.
The protests, organized under the hashtag #ReformEFCC, have outlined six key demands including respect for fundamental human rights, cessation of indiscriminate arrests and home invasions, an end to property destruction during sting operations, stopping the profiling of young Nigerians, and halting the assault and manhandling of citizens.
A Twitter user, @PidomNigeria, emphasized that the #ReformEFCC protest is a non-political, organic movement aimed at advocating for a reformed EFCC for better performance. The user warned that any attempt to politicize the protest would be dealt with by the participants themselves.
