The House of Representatives has decided to investigate the failure of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the government, oil companies, and other organizations to remit taxes, aiming to recover all outstanding debts owed to the Federal Government. The House also urged the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to promptly recover all taxes owed by MDAs, oil companies, and other entities.
The decision came after a motion was moved by Hon. Esosa Iyawe, highlighting the importance of taxation in regulating economic activities and providing funds for national development. He expressed concern over the substantial amount owed in taxes by companies and government agencies, as well as the adverse effects of under-remittance and non-remittance of taxes on the economy.
The House also resolved to investigate the procurement of capital projects by MDAs and institutions of the Federal Government, aiming to recover any withheld sums from project execution. This decision followed a motion by Hon. Kelechi Nwogu, who raised concerns over the alleged awarding of contracts below the approved budget for capital projects, leading to project delays and abandonment.
The House mandated its Committees on Public Accounts, Finance, Financial Crimes, Public Service Matters, and Public Procurements to conduct these investigations and report back within four weeks for further legislative action. The resolutions aim to ensure compliance with tax remittance and proper execution of capital projects by government agencies and organizations.
