The House of Representatives has passed a bill for the establishment of state police in Nigeria, and has advanced it to the second reading.
Sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, and 14 others, the bill aims to amend relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution to enable states to create their own police forces.
During Tuesday's plenary session, lawmakers debated the bill, with Kalu, standing in for Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, urging members to prioritize the safety of Nigerians over political interests.
Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos) also expressed support, highlighting the need to address Nigeria's internal security challenges with a police force that is currently understaffed considering the country's population of over 200 million.
