In a widely circulated video, Alex Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency (APGA), was seen assaulting Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, who was delivering a package to him at his residence in Maitama, Abuja. The video shows Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping the driver and verbally abusing him for requesting he come outside to collect the delivery.
During the altercation, Ikwechegh, visibly angry, questioned the driver's audacity, citing his own status and warning that he could “make the driver disappear” without consequence. The footage also captured him taunting the driver to report him, further stating his position and influence.
This incident follows Ikwechegh’s recent ascension to his parliamentary seat after a Tribunal ordered that his opponent, Emeka Nnamani of the Labour Party, be removed due to allegations of certificate forgery. While Nnamani has denied the forgery claims and any ban from political participation, the Tribunal judgment has kept the matter in public focus.
The video of the assault has sparked strong reactions online, with many Nigerians condemning the display of power dynamics and calling for accountability from public officials.
