The House of Representatives has mandated its committee on banking institutions to investigate the recent dismissal of about 600 staff members by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This decision followed a motion of urgent public importance by Hon. Jonathan Gbefwi, representing Karu/Keffi/Kokona Federal Constituency of Nasarawa State.
The CBN recently laid off several employees, including directors, as part of a reform to enhance the bank's operations. Gbefwi highlighted that the extensive downsizing affected nearly all staff in the governor’s directorate, raising concerns among stakeholders, including employees, labor unions, and the public.
Gbefwi expressed worry that the dismissals might lead to a brain drain, with top-notch professionals potentially seeking opportunities in Europe and America, thereby disadvantaging Nigeria. He also pointed out that the lack of fair hearings or panels for those retrenched could result in significant settlement costs for the nation.
"The House is concerned about staff morale and progression," Gbefwi said. "Seeing their superiors treated with disregard could discourage professionalism and meritorious service in civil careers." The committee's investigation aims to address these concerns and ensure fair treatment of the affected employees.
