House of Representatives Urges Federal Government to Halt Multiple Taxation Amid Economic Hardship

House of Representatives

The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to stop imposing additional economic burdens on Nigerians through unnecessary and multiple taxation. This resolution came following the adoption of a motion led by Rep. Peter Aniekwe, co-sponsored by House Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda and four other lawmakers during Thursday's plenary session.

Rep. Aniekwe highlighted the current economic challenges in Nigeria, marked by rising inflation, unemployment, and the increasing cost of living, which have significantly impacted the lives of many citizens. He emphasized that multiple taxes, levies, and charges at various government levels further strain the financial well-being of low-income earners, who are already struggling to afford basic necessities such as food, healthcare, and education.

“The introduction of additional taxes, such as consumption and service taxes, especially on essential goods and services, is worsening the financial situation for ordinary citizens, deepening inequality,” Aniekwe said.

While acknowledging the importance of taxation in government revenue, Aniekwe urged a balanced approach, where revenue generation does not worsen the economic struggles of the masses, particularly in a time when businesses and families are still recovering from recent global and local challenges.

In response, the House urged the federal government to reassess current tax policies and prevent imposing unnecessary taxes, particularly on essential goods. It also recommended alternative revenue strategies such as widening the tax base to include high-income earners, strengthening the enforcement of existing tax laws, and exploring methods to boost agricultural exports.

Additionally, the House tasked its Committees on Finance and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to review tax laws within three weeks, streamline collection processes, and eliminate redundant or overlapping taxes that exacerbate the financial burden on citizens. The Committee on Legislative Compliance was also mandated to oversee the implementation of the resolutions.
