The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has restated its zero-tolerance stance on examination malpractice following a viral video alleging candidate impersonation during one of its examinations.
The footage, which surfaced online, showed suspected proxies apprehended while sitting for the exams on behalf of candidates. In one case, a man identified only as Kay was alleged to have been writing on behalf of a bank manager, while another female suspect claimed she was representing a Taraba State commissioner.
In a statement signed on Monday, ICAN’s Registrar/Chief Executive, Lanre Olasunkanmi, stressed that the institute’s examination processes are anchored on globally accepted standards of integrity, and any attempt to compromise them will attract strict sanctions.
“ICAN wishes to state unequivocally that it maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for all forms of examination malpractice, including impersonation,” Olasunkanmi said.
He added that ICAN had launched a full investigation into the matter and assured that disciplinary measures would be taken in line with its regulations, with findings to be communicated transparently to stakeholders.
The Institute also urged the public to avoid speculation or hasty conclusions based on unverified claims, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the credibility of its examinations and protecting the reputation of the accounting profession in Nigeria and beyond.
