IGP Disu Inaugurates Committee to Drive State Police Reform

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on Wednesday inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state policing and advance his reform vision for the force, following his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous IGP.

Disu made the announcement during his inaugural conference with senior officers at the Peacekeeping Conference Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja. The development was disclosed in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin.

The conference brought together top strategic managers of the Nigeria Police Force to discuss institutional priorities and pressing national security concerns.

Professor Olu Ogunsakin, Director-General of the National Institute for Police Studies, was appointed to chair the state police implementation committee, while CP Bode Ojajuni will serve as secretary. Other members include DCP Okebechi Agora, DCP Suleyman Gulma, ACP Ikechukwu Okafor, CSP Tolulope Ipinmisho, and retired CP Emmanuel Ojukwu, who currently serves as Provost of the Police Public Relations School.

Addressing the senior officers, Disu emphasised that leadership is “not about position but responsibility,” urging commanders nationwide to prioritise professionalism, discipline and accountability in their operations.

He clarified that the proposed state policing framework is not designed to replace or weaken the Nigeria Police Force but to function as a complementary structure within a coordinated national security system. According to him, the reform aims to strengthen national cohesion while improving operational effectiveness at local levels.

The IGP stressed that authority must be exercised with restraint and that respect for human rights remains fundamental. He insisted that every Nigerian, regardless of background or status, deserves dignity, fairness and justice.

As part of internal reforms, Disu announced plans to strengthen oversight mechanisms, directing that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad be empowered to function independently. He noted that decentralisation would enable different tiers of government to play a more active role in security management.

Tinubu to Swear in Disu as Substantive Inspector-General on Wednesday

Disu’s appointment follows his selection by President Bola Tinubu as Acting Inspector-General of Police on February 24, 2026, after the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun. His nomination was later unanimously endorsed by the Nigeria Police Council, and he is expected to be formally sworn in as substantive IGP at a Federal Executive Council meeting.

His elevation comes at a time of growing security concerns across the country, including rising incidents of kidnapping, banditry and communal violence. The state police initiative forms part of broader reforms aimed at decentralising policing powers and improving response to security challenges nationwide.
