The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has established a team to investigate the serious allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, over an alleged assassination plot.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, in a public statement on April 1, accused Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, of conspiring to have her killed due to an unsuccessful attempt to initiate her recall from the Senate. According to Akpoti-Uduaghan, Akpabio allegedly called Governor Ododo to begin the recall process but was informed that it would be impossible because of her popularity with the masses. Dissatisfied, Akpabio reportedly contacted Yahaya Bello, urging him to fund the recall and, alarmingly, suggesting the senator's assassination should be carried out outside of Abuja to make it appear as though the people were responsible.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed that the matter was already reported to the IGP before she made the issue public. Following this, Akpabio filed a petition with the IGP, requesting an investigation and legal action against the senator for what he described as "defamatory" claims. In his petition, Akpabio expressed concern for his safety and the need for legal recourse to preserve peace.
In response to the petition, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the IGP had directed a team to investigate the allegations. “Yes, we have received the petition from the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. The IGP has directed a team to investigate it,” Adejobi said.
The investigation by the IGP's team aims to determine the truth behind these serious claims and bring clarity to the situation.
