IGP Kayode Egbetokun Warns Against Upcoming Nationwide Protest

IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, declared on July 23 that the proposed nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 is ill-advised, urging citizens to refrain from participating. His comments came in response to social media campaigns rallying for the protest amid growing economic hardship in the country. Speaking at a meeting with police commissioners in Abuja, Egbetokun highlighted the severe consequences of previous protests, particularly the EndSARS movement, which exacerbated crime rates and insecurity.

Egbetokun emphasized the need for caution, stating that while the right to peaceful protest is enshrined in the constitution, it is crucial to ensure that demonstrations do not escalate into violence. He recounted the destruction caused during the EndSARS protests, which led to significant damage to public assets, including police stations and courts, as well as loss of lives. “What was intended as a well-meaning exercise led to tales of sorrow, tears, and blood,” he noted.

The IGP urged citizens to abandon the planned protest, asserting that the police are committed to protecting both citizens and their properties. He stressed, “We will not sit back and watch violent activities disrupt our peaceful communities or damage our national infrastructure.” Egbetokun reassured the public that measures are in place to prevent any hoodlums from disguising themselves as protesters to instigate chaos.

Finally, Egbetokun issued a serious warning to anyone considering violent actions in the name of protests. He stated, “We have mapped out plans to ensure that no individual or group can foster a reign of terror and anarchy. We will take decisive action against any attempts to disrupt law and order.”
