The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has cautioned political parties against employing delay tactics and actions that could escalate tensions and lead to unnecessary expenses. He emphasized that the commission would not adjust its operations to accommodate the pace of political parties.
With less than six days remaining until the close of nomination for the off-cycle governorship election in Edo State, only six political parties have submitted the names of their candidates to INEC. Yakubu, also the National Chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), spoke out against the factionalization and imposition of candidates by some unnamed godfathers and reactionary forces from other political parties.
During a meeting between the commission and political parties, Yakubu warned parties to adhere to the timetable released by INEC, particularly regarding the submission of candidate names. He stressed that there would be no extension of the deadline for uploading candidate names to the commission's portal.
Yakubu highlighted the schedule of activities for the Edo and Ondo State governorship elections, urging parties to stick to the proposed dates and modes of primaries to avoid disruptions and unnecessary costs. He emphasized the importance of certainty in planning and the optimal deployment of resources.
