The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled Thursday, August 21 for the supplementary election in Kaura-Namoda South Constituency of Zamfara State.
The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mahmuda Isah, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau, assuring political parties and voters that adequate measures have been put in place for a smooth and transparent process.
The supplementary poll follows the declaration of the earlier by-election as inconclusive by the Returning Officer, Prof. Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University Gusau. He explained that the margin of lead between the top two candidates was smaller than the number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected in polling units where elections were cancelled, necessitating a rerun.
INEC urged political parties, security agencies, and other stakeholders to cooperate to ensure a credible exercise.
INEC C0ntroversy: APC, PDP Trade Blame
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied allegations by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that it deployed military personnel to intimidate voters and party agents during the initial exercise.
Addressing journalists in Gusau, APC Publicity Secretary Yusuf Idris described the PDP’s claims as baseless and a sign of desperation to mask its impending defeat. He said security personnel were only deployed to maintain order and curb electoral malpractice.
