The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reached out to 21 foreign embassies, international organizations, and global powers—including the United States, United Kingdom, United Nations, and European Union—seeking urgent intervention for the release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a letter dated November 12, 2025, titled “SOS – Urgent Global Humanitarian Intervention to End the Unlawful Detention and Torture of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” IPOB called for immediate action from the international community to secure Kanu’s freedom.
The group said the appeal was addressed to diplomatic missions in Abuja, including embassies and high commissions from countries such as the US, UK, France, Germany, Canada, Russia, China, Israel, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, and Ethiopia, as well as the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the African Union (AU).
According to IPOB, the letter followed previous diplomatic efforts to draw attention to Kanu’s continued detention, which the group described as unlawful despite several court rulings and human rights decisions ordering his release.
“This is a global SOS appeal for urgent humanitarian and diplomatic intervention in the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who was detained in Nigeria in June 2021,” the statement read.

The group noted that the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and other international bodies have already called for Kanu’s release, adding that his health condition in custody has reportedly worsened.
“His continued detention has raised serious humanitarian concerns,” IPOB said, urging world leaders to act swiftly to ensure his release and guarantee his well-being.
The letter further appealed to the international community to monitor developments surrounding Kanu’s case and to ensure the Nigerian government adheres to judicial rulings and international human rights standards.
