Israel commenced commemorations on Monday for the first anniversary of Hamas's devastating October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people. Vigils and rallies were held across the country and internationally, with President Isaac Herzog leading a moment of silence at Kibbutz Reim, the site of the tragic Nova music festival where many were killed. Families of the victims gathered in grief, while others rallied in Tel Aviv, calling for the return of hostages taken during the attack.

The anniversary comes as Israel continues its military operations in Gaza and engages in conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Amid ongoing tensions, the Israeli army reported that rockets were fired from Gaza shortly after the commemorative events began, prompting retaliation against Hamas targets in the region. Herzog emphasized the need for global support for Israel in its struggle against its adversaries.

Despite the ongoing violence, there are voices in Gaza expressing a deep longing for peace. Displaced individuals shared harrowing accounts of their experiences during the year of conflict, highlighting the toll it has taken on families and communities. The humanitarian crisis continues, with thousands of lives lost and many more affected by the relentless fighting.

As commemorations unfold, Hamas referred to the October 7 attack as "glorious," while Hezbollah vowed to persist in its efforts against Israel. Amid these declarations, many civilians are left yearning for an end to the violence, with stories of suffering and despair emerging from both sides of the conflict.
