Iwobi breaks EPL record for most Nigerian appearances [see top 5]

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has etched his name into Premier League history, becoming the Nigerian player with the most appearances in the English top flight.

The 29-year-old reached the milestone during Fulham’s 1–0 loss to his former club, Arsenal, on Saturday evening. Although the Cottagers couldn’t find a breakthrough against Mikel Arteta’s side, Iwobi’s achievement stood out as a bright spot.

According to official Premier League records, Iwobi’s start against Arsenal marked his 299th league appearance, surpassing former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi’s record of 298.

The Super Eagles star, who began his professional career at Arsenal’s Hale End academy, has featured for Arsenal (100 games), Everton (123 games), and Fulham (76 games).

By doing so, he has now overtaken some of Nigeria’s biggest football icons in Premier League history, including:

Shola Ameobi – 298 appearances

Nwankwo Kanu – 273 appearances

Yakubu Aiyegbeni – 252 appearances

John Obi Mikel – 249 appearances

Iwobi is now on course to make his 300th Premier League appearance next weekend against Newcastle United — the same club where Ameobi made his name.

Beyond his club success, Iwobi also played a vital role for the Super Eagles during the recent international break, helping Nigeria secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.

It’s a major career milestone for the midfielder, who continues to prove his consistency and longevity in one of the toughest leagues in the world.
