Iyabo Obasanjo Meets Women, Labour Leaders, Pledges Inclusive Governance for Ogun in 2027

Former Senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, on Wednesday met with women’s organisations and labour leaders in Abeokuta, where she promised credible, inclusive and continuity-driven governance if elected governor of Ogun State in 2027.

The meeting, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, drew participants from professional women’s associations, artisan groups and civil society organisations.

Addressing the gathering, Obasanjo stressed that sustainable development in Ogun requires consistent policies that are maintained across successive administrations rather than abandoned with changes in leadership. She said her ambition is rooted in a desire to consolidate progress already made in infrastructure, healthcare, education and economic development, while introducing reforms that prioritise women, youths and vulnerable groups.

Expressing satisfaction with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress at both state and national levels, she commended President Bola Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for their roles in strengthening the party. She pledged to ensure continuity under the APC if given the mandate.

“Development demands continuity, institutional memory and a leadership that understands governance is a relay, not a sprint,” she said.

Obasanjo assured participants that her administration would be built on credibility, competence and compassion, adding that women would not only serve as mobilisers during elections but would also occupy key decision-making positions.

She also promised an open and accountable system of governance focused on measurable outcomes. According to her, transparency would be non-negotiable, with budgets translating into visible improvements in schools, hospitals, roads and job creation.

Speaking further on her governorship ambition, Obasanjo confirmed she would seek the APC ticket for the 2027 race. She pledged to deepen the state’s industrialisation drive and strengthen agriculture and tourism to accelerate economic growth.

Highlighting Ogun’s growing reputation as an industrial hub, she noted that the proliferation of factories has generated jobs and increased internally generated revenue. She likened the state’s potential to China’s Guangdong province, suggesting Ogun could become a similar manufacturing powerhouse.

She also emphasised the importance of agriculture, pointing to Ogun’s vast arable land, proximity to Lagos as a major food market, and closeness to port facilities for export opportunities. Adding value to agricultural produce, she said, would be a key priority.

Iyabo Obasanjo, the first daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, recently returned to active politics after spending about 15 years in the United States, where she worked as a professor and epidemiology specialist.

She previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health under Governor Gbenga Daniel from 2003 to 2007 and later represented Ogun Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011. She lost her re-election bid in 2011 to Gbenga Obadara of the then Action Congress of Nigeria before relocating abroad.
