Kabba Monarch Orders Temporary Shutdown of Churches Over Security Fears

Kogi

Church activities across Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State have been suspended indefinitely following growing security concerns in the area.

The decision was taken by the Obaro of Kabba and Chairman of the Kabba/Bunu Traditional Council, Oba Solomon Owoniyi, in collaboration with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the local government. The move comes after a series of violent incidents, including attacks on churches and the discovery of a large cache of weapons by security agencies in the state.

According to a notice issued by the CAN coordinator in Kabba/Bunu, Rev. Kayode Osatuyi, the directive was agreed upon during a meeting held at the monarch’s palace, attended by traditional rulers and church leaders. The suspension, he explained, is based on credible security reports pointing to threats against churches in the area.

Rev. Osatuyi said the decision was taken after consultations with the state leadership of CAN and urged all churches to comply for the safety of worshippers. He added that churches would be informed once it was considered safe to resume services and encouraged residents to continue praying for peace in the community.

The development follows recent warnings by the Kogi State Government advising worship centres, particularly those in remote areas, to review their activities due to rising insecurity. In recent weeks, several churches in Kabba/Bunu have been attacked, with reports of worshippers being killed and others abducted during services.

Security operations are ongoing, and authorities say further measures will be taken to restore peace and protect lives in the affected communities.
