Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has called for the reform of multilateralism to address the needs of developing countries, particularly those in the Global South. Speaking at the Heads of Parliaments meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Kalu urged for increased representation of African nations, including Nigeria, in global decision-making bodies such as the UN Security Council.
Kalu emphasized that the current multilateral framework is dominated by the Global North, often sidelining the developmental priorities of the Global South. He highlighted the need for inclusive dialogue and equitable participation, noting that developing countries are still grappling with industrialization and economic growth.
The Deputy Speaker used the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an example, stating that while the goals address global challenges, many developing nations are yet to meet basic economic and industrial benchmarks. He urged for the expansion of voices from the Global South in multilateral platforms to ensure fair representation and tailored solutions.
Kalu’s address called for amendments to Article 108 of the UN Charter to grant permanent Security Council seats to African nations, reflecting the continent’s importance and contribution to global affairs.
The meeting served as a preparatory session for the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, in July, under the auspices of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
