The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated steps to amend the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, potentially paving the way for the return of deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II. This decision was prompted by a motion from Majority Leader Hussein Dala during Tuesday’s plenary session, aiming to reverse the controversial 2019 amendment under former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The 2019 amendment had fragmented the historic Kano Emirate, leading to Sanusi’s dethronement. The current political climate, marked by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s electoral victory and his party’s commitment to restoring the traditional emirate system, underscores the renewed efforts for Sanusi’s reinstatement.
Notably, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), had indicated a month before Yusuf assumed office that the issue of the emirates would be reviewed. This legislative move aligns with the party's pledge to revisit and potentially restore the traditional structure of the Kano Emirate.
