Kano community raises the alarm over increasing bandit attacks

Kano

The Farin-Ruwa community in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene following persistent bandit attacks allegedly launched from neighbouring Katsina State.

Community leader and chairman of the Farin-Ruwa security committee, Alhaji Yahaya Bagobiri, made the appeal during a press conference in Kano on Thursday evening.

Bagobiri said repeated assaults on the community and nearby villages had claimed several lives and resulted in the loss of livestock and property.

He listed the affected villages as Farin-Ruwa, Kuraku, Gorantuse, Saure, and Shadu.

“We are here to appeal to both the Federal and Kano State Governments to come to our aid over the worsening security situation,” he said.

According to him, many people have been killed in recent attacks, while over 1,600 cows and other valuables were carted away.

He called on President Bola Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to take swift action, noting that many residents had fled their homes for safety in Kano and other areas.

“The bandits strike at any time — morning, evening, or night — and operate without challenge,” he said. “Just yesterday and the day before, they attacked again, injuring several people and stealing more than 40 cows and other animals.”

Bagobiri also revealed that a recently kidnapped resident was forced to pay a ₦15 million ransom before being released.

He lamented that the number of security personnel in the area was inadequate, pointing out that the attackers often arrive in large numbers — sometimes riding up to 50 motorcycles.

He appealed to the state government to strengthen collaboration with security agencies and urged lawmakers representing Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency to step up efforts to restore peace.

“We also call on our senator and the federal lawmaker representing Bagwai/Shanono Constituency to take more decisive action, even though they are already making some efforts,” he added.
