Kenya’s President William Ruto Dismisses Cabinet Members Except Key Officials Amid Public Pressure

Kenya

In a significant move reflecting public sentiment and responding to recent anti-tax protests, Kenyan President William Ruto announced the dismissal of all Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) and the Attorney General (AG), effective immediately. He spared only the Deputy President and Prime Cabinet Secretary from the sweeping changes.

Ruto's decision, motivated by widespread discontent over a controversial finance bill, underscores his refusal to sign the bill and the subsequent pressure to streamline government operations and reduce expenditure. In a state address on Thursday, he acknowledged the need for a reevaluation of budgetary and fiscal management following the withdrawal of the finance bill.

"We have reached a critical juncture necessitated by recent events surrounding the finance bill. This calls for a comprehensive review and restructuring of our budgetary priorities," Ruto stated.

Moving forward, Ruto plans consultations with various sectors, political entities, and the Kenyan public to establish a more efficient and cost-effective government. He aims to unveil additional measures soon to shape what he describes as a "broad-based government" that is lean and responsive to national needs.

The dismissal of Cabinet members, excluding specific key officials, marks a pivotal moment in Kenya's political landscape as Ruto seeks to address public grievances and reorganize government functions in alignment with broader national interests.
