Kogi Govt Moves to Eliminate Fake and Substandard Drugs

The Kogi State Government has intensified its campaign against the circulation of fake, substandard, and expired drugs across the state.

This was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Drugs and Medical Supply Management Agency, Pharm. Yunusa Salamat Onize, after defending the agency’s 2026 budget before the State House of Assembly in Lokoja on Friday.

Onize revealed that the state has strengthened its strategies to stop the distribution of unsafe drugs and prevent the diversion of medications meant for public health facilities.

She highlighted the establishment of a fully equipped quality control laboratory as a major step forward.
“If you visit our agency today, you will see that the State Government has built a fully equipped quality control laboratory. This is part of our commitment to ensuring that no fake or substandard drug finds its way into our system,” she said.

According to her, the government also sponsored a study tour to further build the agency’s capacity in combating the issue.

She added that the state now delivers drugs directly to all public hospitals, using a dedicated vehicle to ensure timely and safe distribution.

Beginning in 2026, the agency will commence full-scale quality control testing to verify the authenticity of all drugs supplied by manufacturers.

Looking ahead, she expressed confidence that the agency will triple its supply of essential medicines and consumables to health institutions at all levels in 2026, with a focus on drug testing, quality assurance, and improved welfare for health facilities.

She urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drug products.
“We are appealing to the public to partner with us. If you see any suspicious drug product in circulation, report it. Together, we can protect the health of our people,” she said.
